Breathe

In
And
Out
In
And
Out
In
And
Out
Breathe
In
And
Out
With every breath
In
And
Out
I see
I still have the strength to
Breathe
In
And
Out

The other day I was in pain physically, and instead of taking medicine I just kept saying “I’m going to breathe through it.”
I didn’t recognize the strength in that statement until later, when I would be dealing with things emotionally.
Just breathe, I kept telling myself.
When I started on my mindfulness journey two years ago, the first teaching was an emphasis on the importance of the breath. This thing that we often take for granted, that is actually very powerful. It keeps us present, but more so it is the reminder that we are still alive. In the midst of all the thoughts, anxieties, pain that we may feel there is still breath.
Today I realized, when I would choose to breathe through the pain there was this reminder-that pain was not stronger than me. I was still breathing.
Sometimes it isn’t until we get to the other side that we realize we were powerful all along.
We are still breathing.
