Stretch to the heavens
By Destiney McIntosh
Stretch to the heavens
Like the trees stretch to the light
Stretch to the heavens with all your might
Stretch to the heavens
From the earth you come
But you must stretch to the heavens
To reflect the Son
Stretch to the heavens
It is where you will find help
Stretch to the heavens
Even when you feel pinned by what’s been dealt
You must stretch to the heavens
Stretch to the light
Stretch to the heavens with all your might

When I think of what it means to live for God, follow God, I think of the trees.
One time my sister and I were driving on the road, I noticed that the trees didn’t grow into the wires that were near, but rather seemed to cut off and I asked her “does someone come out here and cut the trees? How are their leaves so perfect?”
My sister told me, “No. Trees go around the things that obstruct them from reaching the light.”
And I thought that was powerful. I thought about the way that plants naturally stretch, or lean towards the light. I think that’s what it means to live for God. Not let obstacles keep you from reaching the light. To intentionally bend and stretch in His direction.
Plants lean toward the light because they need it. They show us where our intention should be. Stretching toward heaven.
I want to follow their example, stretching, looking to heaven with all my might.
God, I thank you for your light. I thank you for trees, flowers, and all the plants that stretch toward you, showing me where my attention should be. Lord your words says to put my attention on things above, not things of the earth. Thank you for showing yourself to me, God. Thank you for direction through nature. Thank you for comfort in your life. I pray the same over the ones who need this. This is for your glory and I pray in the name of your Son, Jesus. Amen.
