Don’t Look Back

Watch Your Back

by Destiney McIntosh

Watch your back

Is it facing your past or your future?

Is your focus on pain or possibility?

There is a road ahead

And a road behind

But can you tell the difference?

Which way are you facing?

Watch your back

The light will show the way

If you’re following it, then your shadow

The dark

The pain

The past will be behind you

But if your back is to the light

Then the shadow

The dark

The pain

The past will be in front of you

Watch your back

Face the light

And leave the past behind

Don’t look back. Don’t look back. Don’t look back.

I woke up this morning with these lyrics from this song by Miguel on my mind. They are the words that inspired this poem.

Why is it so hard to get over the past? I’ve been thinking about that a lot. And when I woke up this morning, with these words on my mind, I realized, it’s hard to get over something you won’t let go of. It’s hard to move on when you keep holding on to what is holding you back. It’s hard to see what’s ahead when you are looking behind you.

Don’t look back.

Isn’t this what we learned from Lot’s wife when she turned into a pillar of salt? (Genesis 19:26) There are places that the Lord wants to take us, but we can be so focused on what we’re leaving behind that we never make it there. I don’t want that to be me, and I think that was what the Lord wanted to show me when these lyrics were in my head this morning.

There is a similar song by Marvin Sapp that goes, Don’t look back, keep moving ahead, keep moving ahead. Keep on moving.

That is my challenge. Looking forward, moving forward, without allowing my past to hold me back. Focusing so much on what was left behind. Failing to realize it is not in this season for a reason. God brought me out of that for a reason. Because he has greater things waiting ahead for me. That is where freedom from the past comes from. Recognizing it not as something that is lost, but something that I have been liberated from so that I can have ALL that the Lord has planned for me. It is not a punishment, but a blessing, because there is still so much that the Lord wants to do for me.

So God I pray for the strength to let go of the past. For the self-control to keep my focus set on what is ahead, rather than resting, weeping over what is in the past. I pray for freedom God, from thoughts that haunt me from the past. Help me to accept what is temporary and to not confuse those things for what you have deemed permanent. Help me not to rest in situation as if it is my destination. I pray for the courage to move forward. I pray the same for anyone reading this who needs it. May this be used for your glory. Amen.
